Labour Party Senator Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central, has revealed his behind-the-scenes efforts to mediate tensions between Senator Natasha Akpoti and Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

In an interview with Channels TV from 6:28, Victor Umeh emphasized the importance of parliamentary protocol: “If you want to be a senator you have to be guided by the rules and you must observe it. If there’s anything you don’t like there are ways of addressing them.”

The senator disclosed his personal intervention: “I had to write her (Sen Natasha) and I wrote her a message when the altercation happened. And I told her to quietly find a way to go and apologize to the Senate President for that altercation in the chamber.”

Sen Umeh stressed that his actions were motivated by a sense of national responsibility: “I was doing it very patriotically I didn’t know that more things will still come out in the media.”

Reflecting on the Senate’s elevated status, he argued for a more mature approach to parliamentary interactions: “The Senate is not a place where you expect people there to behave like young people. We are no longer young people we are senior citizens in this country.”

He highlighted the distinguished background of Senate members: “That is why in that chamber you have former governors, retired permanent secretaries, former deputy Governors, and people who have been in the Senate and some of them four, five, ten years.”

He concluded by revealing why the Senate will not give high attention to the allegations raised by Senator Natasha: “The Senate is not a place you want us to be discussing trivial things, we have to focus on issues of national importance. Things that will help us drive the nation on a stride of development and progress.”
