Dr. Balaraba Isah, a female medical doctor and a Muslim, has shared her experience of being locked up in a small cell with over 30 male detainees at a police station in Gwarinmpa, Abuja.

Speaking in an interview with Brekete Family, a human rights program, Balaraba stated that while in the cell she asked how many of the detainees were Christians and how many were Muslims. She said she told the Christians that she knew Christian songs very well and that she could also recite Catholic prayers.

Balaraba said she sang Christian songs with the Christian detainees and encouraged everyone in the cell to stay close to God.

In Balaraba’s words: “I asked the men how many were Christians and how many were Muslims. I told them that I know how to sing Christian songs very well. I started with Christian songs because I grew close to a Catholic family and I know how to say all Catholic prayers. I now told them that they should just be close to God and they should make sure that they commit everything in God’s hand. I advised them that maybe if we are close to God, He will take us out of this situation”.
