Chris Ngige, former Minister of Labour, has shared a conversation he had with late President Muhammadu Buhari about the Nigerian Civil War.

In an interview with Arise TV from 4:52, Ngige said he told Buhari that he had also fought in the civil war. He said Buhari laughed and asked which part of the war he was involved in. He said he told Buhari the area he served but added that he didn’t stay long and was later discharged.

Ngige said Buhari then began to share his own experience from the war. He said Buhari told him how General Theophilus Danjuma, who was his commander at the time, always sent him to the most dangerous parts of the battlefield. He said, “When we were talking I told him I fought in the war and he laughed and he said which sector. I told him the sector but I didn’t stay, that I had to be discharged. He then recounted his experience of how General Danjuma would always send him to places where the war is thick knowing fully well that he won’t say no. And while other officers were taking leave to go home he would be there for General Danjuma as their commander”

Ngige said Buhari explained that General Danjuma trusted him so much because he never refused any assignment, no matter how risky it was. He said Buhari told him that while other officers were taking breaks to return home, he (Buhari) remained at the frontline, carrying out orders without complaint.
