President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former Anambra governor Peter Obi, and ex-Ekiti State governor Kayode Fayemi had a brief but warm interaction at the Vatican on Sunday during the installation mass of Pope Leo XIV.

According to a report by Daily Trust, the three prominent Nigerian politicians were in Rome to witness the historic papal ceremony. Fayemi, a devout Catholic and Papal knight like Obi, reportedly spotted President Tinubu sitting among other dignitaries. He then invited Obi to join him in greeting the Nigerian leader.

On approaching Tinubu, Fayemi courteously said, “Mr. President, welcome to our church, and thank you for honouring the Pope with your presence.”

President Tinubu, in a lighthearted reply, quipped, “I should be the one welcoming you and Peter. I’m the Head of the Nigerian Delegation.”

The humorous response prompted laughter from Obi, who replied, “Yes, indeed. We are members of your delegation.”

The moment highlighted a rare display of unity and mutual respect between political rivals, particularly against the backdrop of Nigeria’s often tense political climate. The exchange has drawn attention from observers who see it as a reminder of the importance of civility in politics.

Fayemi and Obi, both known for their commitment to the Catholic faith, were visibly pleased by the cordial nature of the encounter.
