Obong Victor Attah, former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, has emphasized the need for accountability in governance to prevent wrongdoing.
In a video shared by Channels TV from 44:53, Attah said he witnessed where a minister was removed from office for using his official car to take his family to church. According to Attah, this was considered corruption at the time, and the minister faced consequences for the action.
Attah explained that such strict measures were possible because the country operated under a federal system that valued accountability. He pointed out that when wrongdoing is not punished, it continues to grow unchecked.
In Attah’s words: “I witnessed where a minister was sacked from cabinet because he used official car to take his family to church on a Sunday. They said it was corruption for you to use official car to take your children to church on Sunday. That is the whole point I am making because then we were in a federal system where there was accountability and consequences for doing wrong. If you don’t punish wrong doing, the wrong doing just keeps growing”
