Edo State’s political arena continues to witness tensions as former Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu has warned that the Peoples Democratic Party could collapse in the state if democratic principles are not upheld.
Speaking in an interview on Channels Television from 27:04, Shaibu disclosed that he had cautioned the PDP chairman about the party’s future emphasizing the need for true democracy.
“I only said what was the right thing. And I said the PDP will die in Edo State. We were members of PDP then as at that time. I said the PDP will die because I’m not seeing catchy democracy, their logo of being democratic is not being expressed,” Shaibu stated.
The former deputy governor further noted that he had warned party leaders that failure to embrace democracy could drive some members, including those who defected from the All Progressives Congress to return to their former party.
“If they don’t rijig it, some of us that came will return, and he felt that I shouldn’t speak like that. And for me, I was just being myself, and that has been settled a long time ago,” he added.
Shaibu’s remarks come amid a turbulent political period in Edo State following his fallout with Governor Godwin Obaseki and his eventual impeachment. His statement raises concerns about the stability of the PDP in the state especially ahead of the upcoming gubernatorial elections.
While the PDP leadership has not officially responded to Shaibu’s latest claims, political observers believe his warning shows the internal struggles within the party.
With Edo State’s political future at stake, Shaibu’s revelations could further shape the trajectory of power in the state.
