Senator Adams Oshiomhole, who represents Edo North Senatorial District, has raised fresh concerns over the billions of dollars wasted on Nigeria’s ailing refineries, questioning why they remain moribund despite repeated promises of turnaround maintenance.
The lawmaker said huge sums allocated over the years yielded no results, citing his past encounter with the late Minister of Petroleum, Dr. Rilwanu Lukman, as an example of failed assurances.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News from 18:03, Oshiomhole said: “I asked a former, now late, Minister of Petroleum, the man from Zaria, Rilwanu Lukman. I said, ‘What happened to your promise? You asked for 500 million, you’ve collected over 23 billion. The refineries are dead.’”
The senator lamented that Lukman, once a respected figure in the oil industry, was unable to fulfill his pledge of reviving the country’s refineries, despite accessing massive funds for maintenance.
According to Oshiomhole, successive administrations followed the same path, pouring billions into the refineries without achieving functional results, thereby sustaining Nigeria’s reliance on imported fuel.
He stressed that the collapse of the nation’s refining capacity has worsened economic challenges, led to job losses, and distorted the downstream sector. See, More, Here>>>
