The former Deputy Governor of Edo State, Omobayo Godwins, offered a stunning defense of his brief tenure during a volatile exchange at the Former Deputy Governors’ Forum, insisting he was legitimately compensated despite the legal challenges surrounding his appointment. His comments came in response to allegations from his predecessor, Philip Shaibu, that Omobayo was never a legitimate holder of the office, setting the stage for a dramatic public spat between the two politicians from the same state.

According to a video posted on the Official YouTube channel of Channels Television from 08:25, while disputing claims that he was impersonating a former office holder, Omobayo declared, “I received my salary up to November, Even the FG paid me, I can show it to you,” asserting his legal claim to the position. He pointed out the existence of his pay slips, which he offered to present as irrefutable proof of his official capacity and the compensation received from April to November.

Omobayo, who identifies as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, acknowledged the political complexity of the situation, especially given the transition to a new government. He maintained that his appointment was not self-imposed, stating he never made himself the Deputy Governor, even if it was only for a short period. He emphasized that there were established processes governing his time in office.

The clash erupted after Shaibu, who was previously impeached, interrupted the introduction of dignitaries to contest Omobayo’s designation as a former Deputy Governor, citing a declarative court judgment that allegedly rendered the office vacant. Shaibu claimed the court ruled Omobayo never existed in the capacity, accusing him of impersonation and demanding the return of a state-owned vehicle bearing the Coat of Arms.

Despite the bitter public confrontation, Omobayo made efforts to de-escalate the tension, referring to Shaibu as his “elder brother” whom he highly respects. He regretted that the private court matter had been brought into a public national forum, calling it “not right” to start “ranting and making noise” about a case currently under appeal since July, with no set date for hearing.
