Umaru Bago, the governor of Niger State, has stated that the security challenges in his state did not just start recently but have existed for a long time because of its vast land size.
In an interview with TVC from 0:35, Bago said Niger State alone makes up 11 percent of Nigeria’s total land area. He said Borgu Local Government Area in Niger is bigger than the entire southeast region of Nigeria combined.
Bago said there are forest reserves and wildlife reserves in Nigeria that have existed for many years. He said unfortunately, these lands have now become dangerous hideouts for criminals.
Speaking further, Bago said his government has started a major plan to clear 250,000 hectares of land every year and the goal is that within four years, a total of 2 million hectares will be cleared. He said by removing these bushes and forests where criminals hide, the government hopes to make the land safe and more useful.
In Bago’s words: “These security issues did not start today, we have big land size. 11 percent of the total size of Nigeria is Niger State. I have a local government, Borgu LGA is bigger than the entire southeast in Nigeria.
