Uche Azikiwe, wife of Nigeria’s first president, Nnamdi Azikiwe, has spoken about criticisms aimed at her late husband during an event.
In a video shared by Symfoni TV from 6:50, Mrs Azikiwe said some critics blame Azikiwe for certain challenges faced by the Igbo people today. She said such comments often upset her and her children
However, Mrs Azikiwe said she has come to understand that many of these criticisms often come from young people who were born after the Nigerian Civil War ended in 1970. She expressed optimism, saying that with time, these individuals will grow and understand the significant contributions her husband made to Nigeria, Africa, and the world.
In Mrs Azikiwe’s words: “There are times we read a lot of things in the social media like, ‘Azikiwe did this, he didn’t do that, the Igbos are suffering because of what he didn’t do’. Being humans, my children and I always feel bad when we come across such comments but after a while, I will say some of the comments are coming from younger ones who were born after the war ended in 1970. So when I look at the age of those making such comments, I say one day they will grow up to understand who Zik was and what he did for Nigeria, Africa and for the world”
