President and Chief Executive Officer of RTH Consulting, Richard Hines has said that former US President Donald Trump does not fully understand the extent of violence affecting both Christians and Muslims in Nigeria.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News from 4:09, Hines, an international security and policy consultant, noted that the crisis in Nigeria is far more complex than often portrayed in international discussions. “I don’t think President Trump gets the fact that they have burned a lot of mosques, they’ve killed tens of thousands of Muslims as well,” he stated.
Hines explained that while many foreign commentators focus on attacks against Christians, Muslims have also suffered devastating losses in several regions, particularly in the northern part of the country. He said that extremist groups, communal clashes, and cycles of revenge attacks have left thousands dead and displaced millions, regardless of their religion.
According to him, simplifying Nigeria’s conflict into a one-sided religious persecution narrative distorts the reality on the ground and makes it harder to find lasting solutions. “The violence in Nigeria is tragic and widespread, both Christians and Muslims are victims,” Hines said. “What’s happening there is a combination of poverty, failed governance, and extremism, not simply a religious war.”
The RTH Consulting CEO added that the United States government and the international community must approach Nigeria’s insecurity crisis with a deeper understanding of its root causes.
