In a recent interview shared by News Central TV, political analyst Nelson Ekujumi reacted to comments made by Nigeria’s former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, about the state of democracy under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Atiku had earlier accused the government of clamping down on opposition voices and warned of what he described as a drift towards authoritarianism. He pointed to the police invitation of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, the attack on the convoy of former Attorney General Abubakar Malami, and the disruption of a Katsina Elders Forum meeting as signs of shrinking civic space.
Responding, Ekujumi disagreed with Atiku’s position, saying the former Vice President should be more cautious in his remarks. He stated: “I don’t see why the former vice president will drift from his exalted position as a former vice president of Nigeria and become somebody who makes outlandish statements like the man at the bus stop. You expect the former vice president to be measured, to be responsible, to be elderly in his comments. But unfortunately and sadly the reverse has been the case.”
Ekujumi further argued that political leaders must show restraint in their public statements, stressing that irresponsible remarks could inflame tensions in an already divided political climate.
