According to a report by TVC News on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has addressed ongoing criticism surrounding his recent remarks to former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi. Speaking publicly, the governor emphasized that his comments were grounded in concern for public safety, and he urged political actors to focus on the needs of Edo people rather than fueling unnecessary controversies.
During the address, Okpebholo clarified that his advice to Obi—to consult appropriate authorities before visiting Edo—was not politically motivated but rooted in personal experience and available security intelligence. He referenced a tragic incident that occurred during his own visit to Benin Airport, where he disregarded a police advisory and a member of his security detail was fatally shot. ”
“I’ve been through the same situation,” the governor said, referencing the event. “I was told to stay back at the airport by the commissioner of police at the time, but I chose to leave. Unfortunately, my security aide was shot right at the gate. That’s why I gave a similar warning to the former Anambra governor. He can choose to listen or not.”
Governor Okpebholo also dismissed criticisms over his choice of words and asserted that political opponents were intentionally twisting his message. He called on residents and leaders to focus on governance and development rather than engaging in distractions. “I don’t know which one is paining them. Is it because I said they don’t have shishi?”
“This matter is not of importance to Edo people,” he stated firmly. “Let’s channel our energy toward what truly matters—progress, peace, and prosperity in our state.”
