Renowned preacher and General Superintendent of Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor W.F. Kumuyi, has publicly rejected theological claims that the biblical verse Isaiah 53:5 refers solely to spiritual healing and not physical healing.
Speaking during a recent sermon broadcasted via YouTube from 1:17:30, Kumuyi addressed the growing interpretation among some Christian authors and theologians that undermines the physical healing aspect of the verse.
“Some preachers, some writers, some theologians say that what you read in Isaiah 53:5 — ‘By His stripes we are healed’ — is not about physical healing but spiritual healing,” Kumuyi said firmly. “Theologian, I don’t accept that.”
To support his position, Pastor Kumuyi pointed his listeners to the Gospel of Matthew chapter 8, verses 16–17, where the healing ministry of Jesus Christ is directly linked to the prophecy in Isaiah. Quoting the scripture, he reminded the congregation that Jesus healed all who were sick and demon-possessed, and that this act was explicitly described as a fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy.
“Matthew makes it clear. He healed them all — that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying, ‘Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses,’” Kumuyi stressed. “That’s physical healing, not just spiritual. If you were there on that day and you were sick, what would He have done? He would have healed you.”
The respected cleric concluded by reiterating the unchanging nature of Christ: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”
Kumuyi’s firm stance serves as both a theological correction and a faith-affirming message for believers, especially those seeking divine healing. His interpretation aligns with many Pentecostal and evangelical teachings that believe the atonement of Christ includes not only the forgiveness of sins but also healing from physical illness.
This message reinforces a central belief of his ministry: that God’s power to heal remains active and available for all who believe.
