Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, has defended his country’s ongoing military offensive in Gaza City, insisting it is both necessary and legitimate.
Speaking on the recent decision by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to intensify ground operations, Danon said the objective remains clear: the return of Israeli hostages and the removal of Hamas from power.
“We know how this war will end—with the hostages coming back home and Hamas not in power,” Danon stated.
“The sooner it happens, the less suffering there will be for everybody.”
According to The Sky, the decision to push deeper into Gaza comes amid growing domestic and international pressure for Israel to consider striking a deal with Hamas to secure the release of captives.
Danon acknowledged the possibility of an agreement but stressed that military measures are unavoidable if negotiations fail.
“Maybe there will be an agreement? But if not, we will have to take military measures in order to bring back the hostages.
We cannot call it a day when the hostages are still in Gaza,” he declared.
When pressed on accusations that Israel’s operations amount to war crimes, the ambassador firmly rejected the claim.
“I am not familiar with any other option,” he said.
“We could have finished this war very fast, but because we fight according to international law, we pay a heavy price. We have many casualties.”
Danon was unequivocal in his position, arguing that the only war crime was committed by Hamas during its October 7, 2023 attack on Israel.
“I don’t accept this notion of committing a war crime,” he emphasized.
“The war crime was committed on 7 October 2023 by Hamas.”
For Israel, he concluded, the path forward is clear: hostage return and the end of Hamas rule.
