The former governor of Anambra state, Peter Obi has taken to his official X account on Friday to appreciate the governor of Osun state, Ademola Adeleke for stepping into the case of a young man who was sentenced to death by hanging in Osun state.
Recall that after the report surfaced online, the governor of Osun state said;
“I have received the report of a case of a young man reportedly sentenced to death by hanging in Osun State for stealing a fowl. Consequently, I have directed the Attorney- General and Commissioner for Justice, Osun State to commence full investigation into the matter and initiate processes to grant prerogative of mercy to the young man”.
Reacting, Peter Obi commended the governor for acting swiftly on the matter. The former governor of Anambra state said the case has shown the harsh inequalities of the Nigerian legal system.
According to Peter Obi on his official X account;
“I like to commend Governor Ademola Adeleke for stepping in to prevent the inhumane punishment of death by hanging for the theft of a fowl and eggs—an offense for which the individual had already spent 14 years in prison. That sentence alone far exceeded the demands of justice, if the crime warranted such consideration in the first place”.
