According to a report by The Nation on Saturday, March 21, 2026, Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, the Amanyanabo of Elem Kalabari, has explained the reasons behind his conversion to Islam, outlining the personal reflections and intellectual path that led to his decision as well as the discipline that continues to guide his life.
The traditional ruler, widely known as Da Amakiri Tubo, spoke extensively about his spiritual journey, describing it as a process shaped over many years through exposure to different belief systems, cultural influences, and evolving personal convictions.
He recounted that his decision to embrace Islam was not sudden but developed gradually through contemplation and experience, noting that the religion eventually offered him a sense of direction and stability that he had long sought in his life.
Dokubo-Asari disclosed that his early years were rooted in a deeply Christian background, influenced significantly by his family and upbringing, which played a major role in shaping his initial understanding of faith and religious practice.
He noted that his connection to Christianity was not only through his immediate environment but also extended to his lineage, mentioning that his grandfather, who passed away before he was born, served as an Anglican catechist and contributed to the religious heritage of the family.
Despite this background, he explained that his personal experience within Christianity did not fully align with the Anglican tradition, as his interest and participation leaned more toward the Baptist denomination during his formative years.
He reflected on his childhood religious activities, indicating that his exposure to church life did not include regular attendance at Anglican services, even though it was part of his family’s religious identity, highlighting a divergence between tradition and personal inclination.
“I found peace in Islam,” he said. “I can’t remember any day I attended an Anglican Church on a Sunday while growing up.” Read_More…
