In an interview with Vanguard, Senator Chris Ekpenyong, a founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, has expressed deep concerns over the future of the party, warning that the defection of key members could severely damage its chances of recovery.
According to Ekpenyong, more PDP governors, especially those seeking second terms, are preparing to leave the party. He pointed out that Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom has already declared his support for President Bola Tinubu and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, signaling a broader realignment away from the PDP.
Discussing the situation in Rivers State, Ekpenyong revealed he had personally tried to contact Governor Siminalayi Fubara to offer political advice amid the ongoing conflict with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. In his words, “I called Fubara, he didn’t answer. But I sent him a message. I told him that since Tinubu was in France, he should visit him because this whole battle is about delivering Rivers State votes to Tinubu.”
He said the humiliation Fubara is facing and the absence of intervention from the presidency clearly show that the battle is aimed at weakening PDP’s influence, with Tinubu now holding considerable control over the party’s future.
