A heated session at the Nigerian Senate on Tuesday saw Senator Abba Moro making a passionate appeal for the reduction of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension from six months to three months.
The Senate had earlier deliberated on disciplinary measures following recent controversies, with Senator Natasha facing a six-month suspension.
However, during the debate, Senator Moro urged his colleagues to consider a more lenient approach, emphasizing the unity of the legislative body and its responsibility to Nigerians.
“Having admitted that we are one family in this Senate before, and that we will continue to remain one family that we have adopted for ourselves in the past, believing that Nigerians are looking up to us for laws and checks that will bring hope to the ordinary Nigerian,” Moro stated.
“I think that as unfortunate as it seems, this distraction is avoidable, and after today, Mr. President, I hope very sincerely that all of us will put hands together to ensure this does not divide us further.”
He further appealed to the Senate leadership to consider reducing the suspension period, arguing that three months would be adequate for restitution.
“We plead that while implementing these recommendations, which are likely to be approved by the Senate, the six-month suspension for Senator Natasha be reduced to three months, if convenient for the Senate and Mr. President. Three months is sufficient for some level of restitution,” he said.
As the session progressed, senators deliberated on Moro’s plea, with some expressing support and others maintaining that the original six-month decision should stand.
The final resolution is expected to be announced soon, as Nigerians keenly watch the developments.
