During an interview on Channels Television, Segun Sowunmi from 9:42, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), revealed that he questioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directly about the role and influence of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike—“the kind of questions you can’t ask him,” he said—while also raising concerns about the president’s appointment of CBN Governor Yemi Cardoso.
Sowunmi explained that during his visit to the president, he openly criticised some appointments he found problematic, particularly the head of Nigeria’s apex bank. He was surprised by the president’s justification for choosing Cardoso, which suggested a deliberate attempt to insulate monetary policy from political interference.
According to him, “The president gave me an example that shocked me because I told him, I said, ‘Listen, what’s this? And he said to me, Segun, do you know why I put Yemi there? Because even I cannot even give him instructions if he doesn’t agree. He gave me a good example. I won’t tell you the example, but he first told me that I told you to do this. And I said, Ah, Mr President—no. And he said, Mr Segun, I’m the president, oh. He said everybody knows Yemi; his eyes are on the inflation and the money in circulation, that kind of stuff. I asked him, What about Governor Nyesom Wike? The kind of questions you can’t ask him.”
