The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has advised Edo State’s newly sworn-in governor, Monday Okpebholo, to avoid launching any investigations into his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki, urging him instead to concentrate on governing the state effectively.

According to a report by Punch Newspaper on Monday, July 14, 2025, Wike cautioned that starting a probe so early in his tenure could sidetrack the new administration from its main responsibilities. He suggested that focusing on state development would be more beneficial than digging into the past administration’s activities.

Governor Okpebholo had previously indicated plans to set up a panel to examine Obaseki’s time in office. He made this announcement during a victory parade in Benin City, addressing various groups of supporters. However, Wike responded by emphasizing that political disputes should not interfere with the task of leadership. He pointed out that even though he personally had issues with Obaseki in the past, he believes pursuing old grievances would not serve the state’s interests.

During his visit to Edo State, Wike also addressed Adams Oshiomhole, a former governor and APC leader. He used the opportunity to publicly express regret for his previous confrontations with Oshiomhole, calling for unity among political actors in Edo. He encouraged all parties to set aside differences and work towards the collective progress of the state.

Wike stressed that moving beyond past conflicts and concentrating on governance would yield better results for the people of Edo.

In his own words, he remarked, “I apologised on national TV to you, sorry for what I did to you, leave it and let them carry their wahala and go, focus on the development of Edo, and you will see what you will achieve at the end of the day.
