PDP Chieftain Segun Showunmi has explained his recent public disagreement with Peter Obi and his supporters, revealing that his objections stem from concern about Nigeria’s international image rather than disputing the accuracy of their economic assessments.
In a revealing interview with Daily Trust from 19:28, Otunba Segun Showunmi acknowledged Nigeria’s economic decline while suggesting a more measured approach to public criticism. “We built the biggest economy in Africa, and we built the greatest, the biggest GDP in Africa, until we handed over power to them in 2015, and between 2015 to date, we have become number four. All the indicators are bad,” Showunmi stated.
He elaborated on his motivation for pushing back against certain criticisms: “Sometimes, I am even the one showing up for national reputation by quarreling with my Obidient brothers that, ‘Oh, don’t let us demarket our country.’ It’s not because they are wrong on data; it’s just because I don’t believe that as Nigerians, there shouldn’t be some part of us that wishes to hold on to our own country, so that we will not just be a people that go all over the world shaming ourselves. But who has brought the shame to us? I guess we all know the answer.”
This statement follows Showunmi’s recent criticism of Peter Obi for claiming that Nigeria has more people living in poverty than China, Indonesia, and Vietnam combined. Earlier this week, Showunmi had argued that Obi’s measurements were “skewed” and urged the former Anambra State governor to refrain from “demarketing” Nigeria in international forums.
