According to a report by Punch Newspaper, Oba Oladipo Olaitan, leader of a faction within the Yoruba socio-cultural group Afenifere, reaffirmed his group’s opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s administration. He explained that Afenifere’s position springs from concerns about governance and accountability rather than partisan politics. According to Olaitan, the administration has failed to address core issues affecting the region, including infrastructure decay and economic hardship. This perceived neglect has hardened the group’s resolve to demand better performance and transparency from those in power.

In response to claims that members are defecting to the ruling party under pressure from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Olaitan expressed scepticism. He said there is no evidence that officials are being coerced by anti-graft operatives simply to avoid investigation. Rather, he argued that defections reflect personal ambitions or alignment with patronage networks. He insisted that Afenifere stands apart from such manoeuvres, maintaining its independence and moral authority in public affairs.

Olaitan also questioned a recent remark attributed to President Tinubu during the commissioning of a major road project. He noted surprise at the suggestion that the president personally financed or built the highway, arguing that such statements undermine the role of contractors and the funding mechanisms that made the project possible. He urged clarity on the sources of funding and on the contractual arrangements that govern public works, warning that conflating political credit with technical delivery creates confusion about responsibility.

He said: I don’t know how many Nigerians listened to Mr President when he was commissioning the road. He said he wanted to congratulate his partner, referring to Chagoury, the contractor who is handling the project. I almost fainted when I heard it. So, the President admitted openly that he is the one building the project.
