Former senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Dino Melaye, has raised alarm over the worsening economic situation in Nigeria, describing the level of hardship as unprecedented and deeply alarming.
According to the report by Daily Post on Saturday, Melaye lamented that the rate of hunger and poverty in the country was spiraling out of control under the current administration led by President Bola Tinubu.
The former lawmaker said the level of hunger in the country was now “chartered,” a term he used to describe a systemic and deeply rooted crisis of food insecurity affecting millions of Nigerians, especially in rural communities.
Speaking during an interview with Channels Television on Friday, Melaye said, “The hunger in this country is chartered; people are dying of malnutrition in the rural communities of this country. People are beginning to visit garbage centres to look for crumbs and food.”
Melaye painted a grim picture of daily life for many Nigerians, stating that an increasing number of citizens are unable to afford even basic meals.
He said the economic hardship is manifesting in severe malnutrition, especially among children in impoverished areas.
He blamed the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government for what he described as failed economic policies and poor governance.
According to him, the ruling party has plunged the nation into a crisis never before experienced, despite promises of reforms and development.
Melaye, who is also a former member of the House of Representatives, accused the current government of lacking a clear and effective strategy to alleviate the suffering of ordinary Nigerians.
His comments come amid rising inflation, surging food prices, and growing discontent across the country, with many Nigerians expressing frustration over the continued decline in living standards since the removal of fuel subsidy and the unification of the naira exchange rate.
