According to Punch newspaper,a top terrorist leader known as Gwaska, who was second-in-command to an ISWAP-linked leader, has been killed along with over 100 others in a major military operation in Katsina State.
The announcement was made by Dr. Nasir Mu’azu, Katsina State’s Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, in a statement on Friday.
According to him, on April 10, 2025, the Nigerian Army’s 17th Brigade and the 213 Forward Operating Base of the Nigerian Air Force launched a well-planned attack on bandits hiding in Mununu Bakai, Zango, Jeka Arera, Malali, and Ruwan Godiya. These locations are in the Kankara and Faskari Local Government Areas.
Dr. Mu’azu said the strike was based on strong intelligence and focused on destroying major hideouts used by terrorists. Gwaska, who recently moved from Danmusa to Mununu Forest, was tracked and killed during the operation. He was described as a high-ranking terrorist target.
The troops also found and destroyed weapons, including two machine guns and locally made shotguns, so they wouldn’t fall back into the wrong hands. The operation has been seen as a serious hit to the groups disturbing areas like Faskari, Kankara, Bakori, Malumfashi, and Kafur.
In another successful mission, security teams attacked a bandits’ route at Dutsen Wori, along the Dandume-Kandamba road, close to the Faskari and Sabuwa border. The raid, carried out around 3:45 am, led to the death of six bandits, including a commander, while others ran away with bullet wounds.
Seven motorcycles were seized, and four more were seen escaping into the forest. The criminals were being watched from their camp in Maigora/Doroyi.
Dr. Mu’azu said no soldiers were injured in the operation.
Governor Dikko Radda praised the success and restated his government’s strong commitment to fighting insecurity. He also said the security forces and communities will continue to work together until peace is restored across the state.
