Nigerian lawyer and human rights activist, Prof Chidi Odinkalu, has reacted to a statement by the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Afam Osigwe, regarding courtroom conduct.

Afam Osigwe had said no judge has the power to tell a lawyer to kneel down. His statement came after human rights lawyer Abubakar Marshall was reportedly told to kneel in court.

According to Osigwe:

“A judex directing a legal practitioner or indeed any person whatsoever to kneel in court is not a recognised judicial sanction under our laws.”

Reacting on his official X account, Chidi Odinkalu expressed disappointment:

“My disappointment with this entire episode is that the person claiming to be a judge didn’t also order the lawyer to raise his hands above his head before bringing out his horsewhip.” Read_More…
