Nyesom Wike’s political game plan during the 2023 elections is once again under fire. An aide to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory of using Peter Obi’s popularity as a cover to advance the G5 group’s anti-party agenda before eventually throwing his support behind Bola Tinubu.
According to a report by The Guardian published on May 13, 2025, Demola Olarewaju, one of Atiku’s media aides, said, “Wike used the Obi wave to legitimise his G5 anti-party activities, then aligned himself with Tinubu who had a clearer path to victory.” He claimed Wike’s support for the Labour Party candidate was never genuine but part of a calculated move to serve his personal ambitions.
“This man was heavily romancing Obi during the election and people were hailing him, not knowing he had agbado in his heart of hearts,” Olarewaju added in a post on X, suggesting that Wike had always intended to support Tinubu.
He further alleged that Wike’s appointment as FCT Minister was not based on merit or competence but a political reward. “Tinubu picking Wike as Minister of FCT was never about delivering results for the people of Abuja – it was simply a raw power transaction, and Nigerians are the ultimate loser,” Olarewaju said.
The Atiku aide also warned that Wike’s political manoeuvring is already geared toward the 2027 elections, possibly at the expense of Nigerians. “The man is negotiating these things all away for 2027, directly to the detriment of Nigerians,” he concluded.
Olarewaju’s remarks reflect growing frustration within the opposition camp, as they continue to analyse the alliances that influenced the outcome of the 2023 presidential race. The tension between Wike and core PDP loyalists appears far from over, especially as early alignments for 2027 begin to surface.
