According to a report by The Nation on Sunday, November 23, 2025, Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor, former counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, has accused a group of inexperienced lawyers of mismanaging the IPOB leader’s legal defense, leading to his life imprisonment for treason and terrorism.
In a scathing statement titled ‘Nnamdi Kanu’s Avoidable Ordeal: How Amateur Legal Showmen Led a High Profile Case into a Judicial Ambush,’ Ejiofor blamed the legal missteps on the misguided actions of the team that took over from him in 2022.
Ejiofor, who had been part of Kanu’s defense team for eight years, recalled that during this time, the team was on the verge of a breakthrough after the IPOB leader’s 2022 acquittal by the Court of Appeal.
He claimed that sensitive legal strategies were disclosed to “clueless clowns” within Kanu’s circle, ultimately derailing the progress and leading to the failed defense.
He criticized the new legal team for prioritizing media attention over legal strategy, calling their approach a “grotesque parody.”
According to Ejiofor, the team’s focus on social media stunts and public grandstanding instead of legal preparation and case law contributed to Kanu’s conviction.
He lamented that rather than focusing on the complex legal matter, the team treated it as a “TikTok legal carnival.”
Ejiofor concluded by calling for a serious review of Kanu’s case, urging the involvement of experienced legal minds to undo the damage and develop a coherent strategy for his appeal.
