According to The Nigerian Tribune on Wednesday, 27 August 2025, Chief Chekwas Okorie, the first National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has shared his perspective on Nigeria’s current political landscape, President Bola Tinubu’s administration, and the buildup to the 2027 general election.

Okorie explained that President Tinubu had made notable efforts in the area of security, with some progress already visible. However, he stressed that the fight against insecurity could not be won by military action alone and that the creation of jobs remained the most effective solution. He doubted whether the administration would be able to achieve this within its remaining two years in office.

On the economy, Okorie noted that Tinubu inherited a failing system. He highlighted key reforms such as the removal of fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira, describing them as bold but painful steps. While these measures could bring long-term stability, their immediate effects had caused hardship across the country and fueled widespread anger among citizens. He acknowledged that this hardship could make it very difficult for Tinubu to secure re-election in 2027, even though the economic decline had not begun under his watch.

The former APGA chairman also pointed out that a major problem confronting the administration was the way federal appointments had been distributed. He observed that the concentration of key positions within a single ethnic group had undermined the government’s ability to manage Nigeria’s diversity effectively. He argued that this imbalance had deepened public frustration and further alienated citizens who already felt excluded from the system.

He remarked, “How can you give every meaningful ministries, departments and parastatals to one ethnic group ? This is not a malicious propaganda. The evidence is there for all to see. He has failed totally to manage our diversity.”

According to Okorie, while Tinubu’s economic policies might eventually produce results, the political cost of the current suffering and the perception of unfair appointments would remain a heavy burden. He stressed that these issues would dominate political debates and could seriously weaken Tinubu’s chances of returning to office in 2027.
