Nearly all of Jesus Christ’s disciples were killed after he rose to heaven. Only one disciple managed to escape death as the majority of the disciples perished in excruciating deaths.

Simon was crucified, James was beaten until his brain was smashed out, Bartholomew was beheaded, Phillip was crucified, Mark was dragged to pieces by a horse, Jude was crucified, Matthew was slammed with a halberd, Thomas was pierced with a spear, Mathias was stoned and beheaded, Luke was hung on an olive tree. The only apostle to miraculously escape martyrdom was John the Divine.

His younger brother James was one of the Twelve Apostles. The Church Fathers maintain that he outlived the other apostles and was the only one to pass away from natural causes. The apostle John is said to have been ordered to be boiled alive in oil by the Roman emperor Domitian, but John only preached from within the pot. At another time, John was forced to consume poison, yet it did not hurt him as Mark 16:18 foretold.
