Former senator, Shehu Sani, has condemned the recent mass killings in Yelewata, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, warning that if the crisis is not properly addressed, similar violence could continue in the region, as reported by THE SUN.
Sani noted that what happened in Benue is not an isolated event.
He said similar problems are also happening in Plateau and Nasarawa states.
He called on northern leaders to treat the issue as a collective challenge that requires unity and action.
He urged political leaders from the North to come together and find lasting solutions to the problem.
According to him, protecting the lives of people and securing communities should be their top priority.
Sani explained that the relationship between the Fulani herders and the Tiv and Idoma farmers in Benue had been peaceful for many years.
He said the Fulani have lived in Benue for over a century and have been accepted by the people.
He asked what changed to cause the current wave of violence.
He pointed out that the root of the conflict lies in the clash between farming and cattle grazing.
Fulani people are mostly herders, while the Tiv and Idoma people are farmers.
He said when cows destroy farm crops, it threatens the livelihood of the farmers.
On the other hand, if pesticides are used to harm the cattle, it also creates tension and retaliation.
Sani stressed that this problem needs a modern solution, he said it is wrong to use old methods to solve new challenges.
He called for dialogue, understanding, and practical steps to prevent further loss of life.
“There is even a folk relationship between the Tiv people and the Fulani people for centuries. So at what point was the trigger for this violence?”
“The Fulani people are not farmers, they are herders, while the Tiv people and Idoma people are farmers.”
“If you allow your cattle to destroy the crops in the farm of someone, you are destroying the person’s life and if you go and spray pesticides that kill my cattle, you are equally triggering an issue,” he said.
