According to a report in Vanguard Newspaper, The Lagos State Government has issued a warning to residents, particularly those living in flood-prone areas, to prepare for heavy downpours and potential flooding in the coming days, advising immediate evacuation from vulnerable zones.

This announcement follows alerts from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), which forecast intense rainfall and rising water levels that could result in widespread flooding across parts of the state.

Speaking at a press briefing on Saturday, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed a list of high-risk communities and urged residents in those areas to take precautionary measures or relocate temporarily to safer locations.

“We have identified flood-prone areas such as Lekki, Victoria Island, Ajegunle, Ikorodu, Mushin, and parts of Badagry, among others. These areas are likely to experience flash floods due to predicted high rainfall and poor drainage systems,” Wahab stated.

The commissioner emphasized that emergency response teams have been placed on high alert and that the state government is working in collaboration with local councils to provide temporary shelters for those displaced by flooding.

He also urged residents to clear their gutters, avoid dumping waste into drainage channels, and report any blocked waterways to the authorities for swift intervention.

“We are not calling for panic, but we are appealing for vigilance and cooperation. The safety of lives and property is paramount,” he added.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has also activated its flood response plan and deployed resources to flood hotspots.

As climate change continues to intensify weather patterns, experts warn that cities like Lagos, with low elevation and dense population, remain highly susceptible to urban flooding.

Citizens are encouraged to stay informed through official government communication channels and to heed all advisories in the coming days.
