According to a report by The Times of Israel on August 10, 2025, a 24-year-old Arab Israeli man from Nazareth, Abdallah Atiyat, was shot dead by Israel Defense Forces (IDF) troops in the West Bank city of Jericho.
Atiyat’s mother, Amina Atiyat, told Arab Israeli radio station Radio Shams that her son had been visiting his aunt over the weekend when army raids and widespread closures disrupted travel in the area.
“He was just trying to get home when they shot him in the head,” she said, explaining that Abdallah had been searching for a taxi to return to Nazareth when the fatal shooting occurred.
Local reports say the incident happened in Jericho’s downtown area amid clashes during an IDF operation late Saturday night. Witnesses claimed Abdallah was unarmed and attempting to navigate roadblocks.
He was initially taken in critical condition to a hospital in Jericho, then transferred to Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem’s Ein Kerem neighborhood, where he succumbed to his injuries.
In response to a request for comment, an IDF spokesperson confirmed that forces had been active in the Jericho region during the time of the incident. “During operational activity, IDF forces identified a suspect approaching them who posed a threat.
The forces fired at the suspect, a hit was identified, and the incident is under investigation,” the spokesperson said.
The killing comes against the backdrop of heightened military activity across the West Bank, as the IDF continues raids targeting armed groups.
Jericho, generally quieter than flashpoint cities like Jenin or Nablus, has in recent months seen more frequent operations, fueling tensions between residents and Israeli forces.
Human rights advocates have called for a transparent investigation, stressing that the army must clarify whether Abdallah posed any genuine danger.
