Shehu Sani, a former senator from Kaduna, has called on President Bola Tinubu to formally acknowledge and commend Japanese philanthropist and plastic surgeon, Dr. Katsuya Takasu, for his remarkable contributions to Nigeria during the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, as reported by Daily Trust.
Sani took to X to remind Nigerians about the time the U-23 football team found themselves stranded in Atlanta, USA, because of financial difficulties prior to the Olympics.
He stated that Dr. Takasu took the initiative to fly from Tokyo to provide assistance, contributing $200,000 to support the team’s travel and allowances. Following the team’s achievement of a bronze medal, he contributed an additional $190,000 as a reward.
“Shehu Sani stated: ‘He rescued Nigeria from humiliation.’ It is time we expressed our gratitude to him appropriately.
Sani expressed disappointment that, despite the generosity of the Japanese billionaire, the Nigerian government failed to officially acknowledge or show appreciation for him. He stated that President Tinubu, presently on an official visit to Japan, ought to seize the opportunity to meet Takasu and express his gratitude.
The former lawmaker emphasised the importance of nations remembering those who supported them during challenging times. He remarked, “Dr. Takasu accomplished what our own government was unable to achieve.” He demonstrated remarkable sportsmanship and compassion.
