Speaking in an interview with Punch, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, explained why he was absent during former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s registration with the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Lawal said the programme was originally scheduled for Sunday, and he travelled to Yola in preparation. However, Atiku later shifted the registration to Monday without prior consultation, a decision Lawal described as changing the goal post in the middle of the game.
Lawal noted that he had other engagements and could not alter his personal schedule abruptly simply because the event was moved. He revealed that he warned Atiku that his absence might send the wrong message, especially considering their shared political alignment, but said the former vice president gave deaf ears to his advice. He stressed that Atiku proceeded with the registration with his people, despite the concerns he raised.
The former SGF added that his absence should not be misinterpreted as a withdrawal from the political movement but a consequence of poor planning and disregard for his counsel. Atiku’s registration with the ADC in Jada, Adamawa, has stirred reactions across the political space, with Lawal’s remarks further highlighting growing internal tensions. View, More,
