In a recent interview on Voice of the People TV from 10:07, Islamic scholar and former peace negotiator Sheikh Ahmad Gumi addressed the ongoing security issues in Nigeria, offering his perspective on the alleged religiously motivated killings and the role of the military in maintaining peace.
“Nobody is killing Nigerians; most high-ranking officers in the armed forces are Christians,” Gumi stated, emphasizing that both Muslims and Christians serve in key security positions and are committed to protecting all citizens. He explained that while violent incidents occur, they are largely the result of ethnic tensions, historical grievances, and external influences, rather than a deliberate campaign against any religious group.
Gumi highlighted the importance of addressing the root causes of violence, describing many perpetrators as “ready-made soldiers” whose actions are fueled by ignorance and manipulation. He defended his peace-building efforts, noting that his engagements with armed groups were conducted openly and accompanied by local, state, and federal authorities. He stressed that dialogue, community engagement, and strategic intervention are far more effective than indiscriminate military action.
On the issue of foreign intervention, Gumi stressed the importance of Nigerian sovereignty and the capacity of the country’s security agencies. He warned that inviting outside forces could complicate the conflict and urged Nigerians to collaborate with authorities to restore peace while ensuring accountability.
Concluding, Sheikh Gumi underscored the shared suffering of both Christians and Muslims and called for a balanced approach to Nigeria’s security challenges. He emphasized that through transparent negotiation, empowered local security forces, and community cooperation, the cycle of violence can be curtailed, promoting lasting peace across the nation.
