According to a report by Nigerian Tribune on Friday, August 29, 2025, Reno Omokri, a former presidential aide, has maintained silence over the increasing calls for his ex-principal, Goodluck Jonathan, to contest in the 2027 presidential election.

Omokri, who was Jonathan’s media aide during his tenure as president, was asked to share his opinion on the matter during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday.

He however avoided making a direct comment, noting that his personal closeness to the former president makes it difficult for him to speak openly on the issue.

The former aide explained that his bond with Jonathan goes beyond the usual professional relationship between a president and an aide.

According to him, Jonathan had, at different times, shown him gestures that reflected deep trust and friendship.

He described Jonathan as someone who treated him not just as a staff but also as part of his inner circle.

Omokri highlighted instances of this relationship, pointing out that Jonathan once traveled to California and spent ten days with him and his family.

This, he said, is one of the reasons why he finds it inappropriate to publicly take a stance on Jonathan’s potential political ambitions.

He stressed that it would not be right for him to openly discuss or push Jonathan’s name into political debates.

The calls for Jonathan to return to the political scene ahead of the 2027 general election have continued to grow, with some groups and individuals insisting that his experience in governance would be beneficial to the country.

However, Jonathan himself has not made any clear statement on whether he would be part of the contest or not.

For Omokri, the matter remains delicate, as speaking either in support or against the idea could easily be misinterpreted due to his long-standing closeness with Jonathan.

He maintained that he would rather remain silent than risk creating wrong impressions about his former principal.

The interview further emphasized how much influence Jonathan still holds in Nigeria’s political space, with many still viewing him as a potential player in future elections.

Omokri’s careful approach, however, reflects the sensitivity surrounding discussions of Jonathan’s political future.

He said, “This is a man who came to California and spent ten days with me and my family.”
