In a heartfelt reaction to the wave of defections from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the acting PDP chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagun, stated firmly that God will be the one to judge and punish the defectors.

His statement points out the depth of betrayal he feels over the exit of several prominent party members, including governors and lawmakers.

Speaking during an interview, which was broadcast by The Sun, Damagun addressed the state of the party and his expectations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He emphasized that power is temporary and no politician, regardless of their influence or riches, can remain in office indefinitely. He assured that despite APC’s strategy of luring PDP members, Nigerians would ultimately determine the country’s leadership through their votes. According to him, the people hold the real power and will speak decisively in the upcoming elections.

Responding to concerns about the defections, Damagun admitted the situation is troubling. “Even in families or businesses, losing one person is painful, not to talk of losing several, including top figures,” he said. However, he added that no one could be forced to stay in the party against their will.

While expressing disappointment, Damagun said the defectors never accused the PDP of wrongdoing. “All these years, PDP provided cover and protection for these people, but they chose to abandon the party at this time,” he said.

He likened it to betrayal, stating, “The experience could be likened to someone who provided you with clothes, shelter, and protection for several years, but you wake up one morning and decide that you want to see the person naked; then God will be the one to judge and punish you.”

He expressed confidence that PDP’s internal challenges can be fixed before 2027, and the party will bounce back stronger.
