The Chief of Staff to the Rivers State Governor, Edison Ehie, has questioned how the recently resigned Rivers State Head of Service, George Nweke, could afford accommodations at the upscale Transcorp Hilton hotel in Abuja without financial backing from political opponents.
In an interview with Channels TV, Ehie pointed to the issues of fears of being out of office as the reason for Nwaeke betraying the governor: “The problem is that of contentment. George Nwaeke is not a contented man. So, he just feels that, ‘Ah, I have left this position. What would I be doing now? Who will help me, and how will I survive?”
Ehie highlighted the financial improbability of Nwaeke’s lodging arrangements before he granted the interview. “George Nwaeke’s basic salary was less than 500,000, so how did he lodge in Transcorp Hilton? It is obvious that these are people who are dishonorable.”
The Chief of Staff elaborated on the circumstances surrounding Nwaeke’s resignation: “The governor wouldn’t have given him money because he resigned, according to his messages. And what he told everybody is that he resigned voluntarily, that he couldn’t serve in a government that Governor Siminalayi Fubara was not the governor.”
He concluded with a harsh assessment of Nwaeke’s character and how the supporters of Gov Fubara feels about him: “But, because he was complaining of hunger, rising from the fact that he was not contented, and they reached out to him. He betrayed his conscience, he betrayed his family, and his children.”
