According to a report from PUNCH, Abuja – Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd), has expressed gratitude to former Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida (rtd), for restoring his rank and honour after he was previously charged with treason.
Speaking at an event honoring Babangida, Gowon reflected on his turbulent past in government and acknowledged IBB’s role in reinstating his dignity. “I had a very rough time in government; I was even charged with treason. Later, President Shagari rescinded that order, and you (IBB) eventually restored my rank and honour. You did quite a lot for the country,” he stated.
Gowon, who led Nigeria from 1966 to 1975, faced exile after being overthrown in a coup. Upon his return, he initially struggled with official recognition until Babangida, as military ruler in the 1980s, reinstated his full military status.
The retired general commended Babangida’s leadership and contributions to national unity, emphasizing the importance of recognizing the sacrifices made by past leaders. The event, attended by dignitaries and former military officers, served as a moment of reflection on Nigeria’s political history.
Gowon’s remarks have sparked conversations on leadership, reconciliation, and the evolving role of former heads of state in Nigeria’s democratic landscape.
