Dr. Oluranti Afowowe has spoken about the remarkable military achievements of Major General Oladipo Diya. He said Diya went through several difficult military trainings and performed exceptionally well in most of them.
In an interview with Edmund Obilo from 16:40, Afowowe said that Diya was the first officer in Nigeria to receive the airborne medal, a special recognition for completing parachute training. He said at the time, Diya was already a colonel, and many officers at that level would rather avoid risky training because they preferred to enjoy the benefits of their rank.
Afowowe said during Diya’s training in the United States, he had to jump from an airplane at least five times to complete the parachute course. He said despite the danger, Diya successfully did it and earned the medal. He also said Diya’s service record was very impressive and stood out even among other top military officers.
In Dr Afowowe’s words: “He had gone through so many training where he excelled. He was the first officer in Nigeria to have this airborne medal. He was a colonel then, he went for parachute training in America. Many officers would not want to die, when you are a colonel you want to begin to enjoy. He had to jump down from the plane at least minimum of 5 times as an officer and he did it. So he had very impressive records”
