Member of the House of Representatives, Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, has shared his thoughts on the growing calls for former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking in an interview with Channels Television from 22.59, Ikwechegh said that while Jonathan is respected across Nigeria, it doesn’t mean he should be dragged back into the race for power.
According to him, people admire Jonathan not just for his time in office but because of the way he handled losing the 2015 election. “Part of the reasons why people respect him the way they do is not because of how well he did as a president but his disposition, his ability to take a decision and understand that money is not everything, being in power is not everything. He lost the election but won people’s hearts,” Ikwechegh explained.
The lawmaker stressed that Jonathan has already become a statesman and bringing him back into “competitive politics” could spoil that image. “I agree with the APC on that. (Goodluck Jonathan shouldn’t run),” he said.
Instead, Ikwechegh pointed out that most Nigerians are currently focusing on two main politicians, Labour Party’s Peter Obi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
“People say they want Peter Obi, people say they want Atiku Abubakar. These are the two major contenders that everyone is saying they want. I go around and talk to my constituents, so I know that Jonathan is not in the picture,” he added
