All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje has slammed Nasir El-Rufai, a former governor of Kaduna State, for his comments regarding President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the 2027 election. The Nation reports that Ganduje has said categorically that any Northerner hoping to run for president should hold off until 2031, when Tinubu will have served two complete terms. In reference to the current North-South power rotation agreement, the ex-governor of Kano State brushed off the notion of the president returning to the North in as little as two years.
He said that was an unreasonable expectation. Concurrent with Ganduje’s remarks, APC founder El-Rufai warned on his verified X account that the North would reject Tinubu in 2027, as it did with President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015. According to El-Rufai, Jonathan and the PDP were defeated in the 2015 election because the North did not back them strongly enough.
He brought up the fact that Northerners felt betrayed and embarrassed by comments made by former First Lady Patient Jonathan and other South-South personalities, notably Jonathan’s Ijaw relatives. He claims that many of these people were living it up in Abuja’s posh NICON and Sheraton hotels in 2011 while they had little to no political clout and were squandering their newfound fortune.
“Indeed, many of them forgot that it was the agitation by groups like the Save Nigeria Group (SNG), spearheaded by people like Pastor Tunde Bakare, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, Mr. Yinka Odumakin (RIP) and co. that ultimately led to then VP Goodluck Jonathan becoming the acting president in the first place following the incapacitation of former President Shehu Musa Yaradua (God rest his soul).” he said.
