Vice Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Dr. Datti Baba-Ahmed, has revealed how the late Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi, played a key role in the spread of terrorism across Africa, including Nigeria.

According to him in a video from 12:30, a secret arrangement was reached in North Africa where Gaddafi offered to support insurgents as part of his plan to secure himself against internal and external threats.

“The truth is that somebody had gone to North Africa and negotiated with Gaddafi. Gaddafi, who was an international terrorist all over the world, said, ‘I will help you like I’ve been doing. If there are plans to kill me and it fails, and you become president, I will retire to your country,’” Baba-Ahmed stated.

He alleged that Gaddafi sent huge sums of money in cash to Nigeria to recruit young men to fight in Libya, while also dispatching a former general to Mali. However, when the Libyan leader was eventually killed, the funds continued to circulate among those recruited, fuelling insecurity across the Sahel and in Nigeria.

“In Nigeria, they gave a crazy amount of money to that gentleman: ‘Go and help these people with the intention of bringing them to fight in Libya.’ When Gaddafi died, they sat on the money. They kept on with the recurrent until after mentioning the name, and then they stopped sending the money,” he explained.

Baba-Ahmed argued that the lingering insecurity in Mali and Nigeria cannot be detached from the ripple effect of Gaddafi’s intervention and the misappropriation of the funds after his death.
