According to recent video shared on Symfoni tv, the political battle for control of the Rivers State House of Assembly has reached a critical stage as a Rivers State High Court begins hearing on the legitimacy of the Speaker of the Assembly. The case, which has divided the state’s political landscape, pits Governor Siminalayi Fubara against his predecessor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The courtroom was packed with legal representatives, political allies, and concerned citizens as the case commenced. The crux of the matter is the leadership tussle between two factions in the state assembly, each claiming to have the rightful Speaker.
At the hearing, legal representatives for both factions presented their arguments, each maintaining that their client was duly elected in line with the House’s standing rules and the Nigerian Constitution.
A lawyer representing one of the factions stated:
“The process through which our client was elected followed all due procedures as outlined by the laws governing the Rivers State House of Assembly. Any claims to the contrary are an attempt to subvert democracy and undermine the will of the people.”
However, the opposing legal counsel countered, arguing:
“What we are witnessing is a constitutional crisis fueled by external influence. The court must determine this matter strictly based on the law, not political considerations.”
Speaking on the matter, Governor Fubara insisted that the rule of law must prevail, urging the judiciary to act in the best interest of democracy.
“This is not about personal interests but about upholding the sanctity of our institutions. I have always been an advocate for peace and good governance, and I trust that the judiciary will do what is right,” Fubara said.
On the other hand, Minister Wike dismissed allegations of political interference, maintaining that the law must be followed.
“This is about legitimacy. Leadership should be determined by the proper application of the law, not by sentiments or external pressure. The truth will always stand,” Wike asserted.
The hearing is expected to continue over the coming days, with political analysts predicting that the outcome could significantly impact the balance of power in Rivers State. As tensions rise, many residents are watching closely, hoping for a resolution that will bring stability to the state’s political landscape.
The court is set to adjourn later in the week for further deliberations.
