In a video published by Echo 36 TV, Hon. Dumle Maol has vehemently condemned Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s disregard of the deadline given by the Rivers State House of Assembly to resubmit the state budget.
In his remarks, Maol criticized the governor’s disregard for the House of Assembly’s orders and emphasized that the lawmakers would not think twice about taking constitutional action if the situation continued.
He asserted, “We gave him 48 hours to appear before the House and present the budget. That ultimatum has expired, yet we have seen no compliance.” He emphasized that although the legislature had been patient, they would now have to take decisive action.
He issued a warning that this House would invoke the letters and spirit of Section 129 if Governor Fubara did not show up on Monday. This alludes to the constitutional clause that gives the legislature the authority to call anyone and use the legal system to compel compliance.
The impasse is a result of the Supreme Court’s decision regarding Rivers State, which has widened the gap between the House of Assembly and the governor.
Lawmakers contend that Fubara’s unwillingness to formally submit the budget for legislative approval jeopardizes the stability of the state and erodes the process of governance.
Maol urged the governor to adhere to the legislative procedures, stating that if he didn’t, the House would be forced to pursue all available legal options.
He asserted, “This is not about politics; it is about upholding the rule of law and ensuring the proper functioning of our state institutions.”
