Dele Momodu, a journalist and politician who was among the few Nigerians that fought against military rule and advocated for a return to democracy through NADECO, recently shared his views in an interview with Sunday Sun.
In the interview with Sunday Sun correspondent, he spoke about governance in Nigeria today, the state of the nation, the political economy, President Bola Tinubu’s policies and their outcomes, as well as the country’s overall direction.
When he was asked to comment on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of state of emergency in Rivers State, he said that Governor Siminalayi Fubara, doesn’t know how to use money to influence people like Nyesom Wike, his political godfather.
He said, “I remember one of my godfathers in those days, God rest his soul, Alhaji Azeez Arisekola Alao, the great Ibadan businessman. He told me once, he said, it’s only a foolish man who will have $10 million and he cannot use $5 million to protect himself. I’m shocked that Fubara could not use the resources of Rivers to protect himself. I’m shocked that even ordinary PR, just to call the people who were all supporting him on telephone, was a problem.”
He said that he knew many people who had supported Fubara voluntarily without asking for a single penny. He lamented that even just picking up the phone one day to call and acknowledge what the people were doing would have made a difference.
He added that it was unfortunate because many people had complained to him, saying, “Hey, Philip, do you know that this man, for whom we are dying and risking everything in Rivers, does not even reach out to us?” He said he did not know who Fubara was relying on for help, but it was clear that if he was expecting a miracle, he had miscalculated badly.
