According to a post on X on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, former minister and political commentator Femi Fani-Kayode has strongly rejected claims by American media personality Bill Maher and others that “500,000 Christians have been killed” in Nigeria over the past year. In a post on X accompanied by a video, he described the narrative as a dangerous attempt to sow religious division and tarnish Nigeria’s image.
In his post, Fani-Kayode wrote: “Bill Maher, the Jewish-controlled American media and the American Deep state have said the world should ‘forget Gaza’ and instead ‘focus on Nigeria’ where, according to them ‘500,000 Christians have been killed in the last one year’. This is a lie and a false narrative. It is the beginning of an insidious attempt to discredit and demonise our country, divide us on religious lines, destabilise us, bring us to our knees, depict us as a leperous pariah state and spark off a religious war. We must resist it. Nigerians beware! Listen to this short clip and stand for our country!”
Fani-Kayode’s comments followed the circulation of social media clips alleging that some U.S. commentators want global attention shifted from Gaza to Nigeria on the basis of alleged mass Christian killings. He dismissed the figures and the premise behind them as “a lie and a false narrative,” insisting they are being used to divide Nigerians and portray the country as morally broken.
Fani-Kayode urged his audience to watch the accompanying video, hinting that it captures the motives behind the push to shift focus to Nigeria. He warned that the narrative could provoke religious tensions and urged citizens to remain vigilant.
