Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir David Lawal, has accused President Bola Tinubu’s government of importing expired maize and rice into Nigeria, as reported by Daily Post on Monday, 28 July, 2025.
Lawal, who is also a farmer, said the decision is hurting local agriculture.
He claimed the market is now full of bad rice and maize, making it hard for Nigerian farmers to survive.
He said prices have dropped sharply, while the cost of farm inputs like fertilizer has gone up.
Lawal said that in the past, a bag of maize could sell for ₦110,000, but now it only sells for ₦65,000.
At the same time, the price of fertilizer has risen from ₦45,000 to ₦70,000.
He believes this situation is making farming unprofitable for many Nigerians.
He accused the government of failing to protect farmers or improve the country’s food security.
The former SGF warned that the country is moving in the wrong direction.
He also said the current government has not done enough to ease the suffering of the people.
Lawal alleged that the importation of expired food is not a mistake, but a deliberate action by the government.
He said it is a serious threat to both farmers and consumers.
“Last year, we could sell a bag of maize for N110,000, but fertilizer was N45,000. Today, fertilizer is N70,000, while maize has dropped to N65,000.
They have imported expired maize and rice, flooding the market and destroying local farmers. Farming has become a lost venture,” he said.
