On Tuesday, October 28, 2025, Zarah Sultana, the Labour MP for Coventry South, took to X to demand the expulsion of the Israeli ambassador and the closure of the Israeli embassy in the UK, urging a complete severance of diplomatic relations with Israel.
In her words: “Expel the Israeli ambassador. Shut down the embassy. Sever all diplomatic relations with the genocidal apartheid state of Israel.”
The post was a direct response to breaking news from Sky News, which reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had ordered the military to “immediately carry out strikes in Gaza” following allegations of a ceasefire violation by Hamas.
The escalation comes amid a fragile US-brokered ceasefire, effective since October 10, 2025, which has been marred by mutual accusations of breaches.
Netanyahu’s office accused Hamas of firing on Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) troops and failing to return the bodies of deceased hostages, including the remains of Ofir Tzarfati, a hostage whose body was reportedly mishandled and returned in pieces multiple times.
The BBC, quoted in Sultana’s post, detailed that the Israeli military released drone footage alleging Hamas staged the discovery of a body to deceive the Red Cross, further straining the truce.
According to the BBC, the Israeli government claims Hamas’s actions constitute a “clear violation” of the ceasefire, prompting Netanyahu’s decision to authorize “forceful strikes” after coordinating with the Israeli military and informing US President Donald Trump.
